What the figures on this site are, and what they are not.

This is not tax advice

TakeHome provides free calculators for general information. Nobody here is an accountant, tax adviser or financial adviser. Nothing on this site is personal advice and nothing should be relied on as such. For advice about your own situation, contact HMRC or a qualified professional.

Estimates, not payslips

The calculators apply published HMRC rates to the figures you enter. They work on a full tax year and divide down. Real payroll works cumulatively, month by month, and uses the exact tax code HMRC has issued you. Small differences are normal. Large ones usually mean a tax code we do not know about.

Where the numbers come from

All rates and thresholds are taken from gov.uk and are listed with their sources on How we calculate. Where a rate is set by the Scottish Parliament rather than Westminster, we say so.

What is not covered

Savings and dividend income, rental profit, capital gains, Self Assessment payments on account, the High Income Child Benefit Charge, pension annual allowance charges and salary sacrifice minimum wage rules are all outside the scope of these calculators. The full list of limits is on the methodology page.

Rates change

Tax rates change at least once a year, on 6 April, and sometimes at a Budget. We update as soon as we can, but there may be a gap. Every page shows the tax year it uses and the date it was last reviewed. If a page looks out of date, it probably is, and we would rather you told us than assumed.
