Editorial Policy

The rules we hold ourselves to when we publish a number.

Why this page exists

This site publishes figures that people use to make decisions about money. A wrong number here is not a typo, it is a bad decision somewhere else. These are the rules we follow so that does not happen, written down so you can hold us to them.

Rules

How content is made

1

Primary sources only

Rates come from gov.uk, HMRC publications and the Scottish Government. We never copy a rate from another calculator or a news article, because errors propagate that way.

2

Every rate is cited

How we calculate lists every threshold we use with a link to the document it came from. If a figure is not on that page, it is not in the engine.

3

Output is tested before publishing

New calculators are run at standard salaries and the results compared against several independent UK calculators. Any disagreement is investigated before the page goes live, not after.

4

Limits are published, not buried

Every tool has things it does not handle. Ours are listed openly on the methodology page so you know when to stop trusting the number.

5

Everything is dated

Each page shows its tax year and the date it was last reviewed. A page with an old date is a page you should treat with caution, and we would rather tell you that than hide it.

6

We do not pretend to be advisers

We are not accountants or financial advisers, we say so on every relevant page, and we point to HMRC and MoneyHelper where proper help is needed.

How AI is used here

We use AI tools to help draft and structure explanations, in the same way a writer uses a research assistant. It is not used to invent numbers. Every rate, threshold and worked example in the calculators comes from a cited source and is checked by a person against that source before it is published. Where a figure could not be verified, we say so rather than publish it.

Corrections

If we get something wrong we fix it and we say what changed. Report an error to hello@REPLACE-WITH-YOUR-DOMAIN.co.uk with the inputs you used and the figure you expected. Corrections take priority over new work.

Independence

Nobody pays for coverage here. There is currently no advertising and there are no affiliate links. If that changes, any paid or affiliate relationship will be labelled clearly on the page it appears on, and it will never change a calculation or a recommendation.
